New builds are often more expensive than older properties, but many people find them more attractive thanks to their fresh appeal and modern design.

Stone Real Estate, a new homes specialist, has carried out research into how much an average new build home costs based on the price per brick and what this is in kilograms.

How much are new builds?

A new build home in the UK costs on average £293,167, and is built with 5,180 bricks. Therefore, some simple maths indicates that the cost of a single brick on a new build home is £57. The average brick weighs 2.7kg so this equates to £21 per kilogram.

As mentioned, new builds often cost more, but you could save money as repairs aren’t needed and there are incentives like Help to Buy, or free kitchen upgrades.

Comparing a new build brick cost with other items

We already worked out that one brick on an average new build costs £57, but if we break this down into per kg of brick it’s £21. How does this compare to other house hold items? Of course, take this with a pinch of salt as it’s just a bit of fun!

Walker’s crisps worked out at £18 per kg, the closest that Stone Real Estate found to a kg of new build bricks. A car of medium size costs around £14 per kg, and coffee will set you back £13 per kilogram.

If we take a look at higher value items as comparison; truffles cost £1,688 per kg, and an iPhone 11 costs as much as £3,878!

What about the costs in different locations?

We all know that houses cost different amounts in different areas. The most expensive being London, specifically Kensington and Chelsea. If we take this area first, the cost of a new build brick is £214. Westminster closely follows with £198, then the City of London with £174.

Outside of London, Chiltern averages only £19 per new build brick. The best value inside of London is Bexley at £64.
