Landlords Left To Foot The Bill For UK Tenant Eviction Ban

Landlords across the UK have been left to ‘foot the bill’ for the UK government’s tenant eviction ban according to landlord association, NRLA.

The company’s CEO, Ben Beadle, claimed the eviction ban has made landlords: “powerless” and that they: “can’t be expected to foot the bill for the government failure.

The blanket ban, projected to end on 20th September, has prevented landlords across the UK from evicting troublesome or unwanted tenants due to fears around tenant welfare during the corona virus epidemic.

The eviction ban also introduces a six month notice period for tenants, to eliminate the possibility of winter evictions. As a consequence, no evictions will actually occur in the UK until March 2021, bar cases of antisocial behaviour and domestic abuse.

Landlords have been hit particularly hard by the ban, with many having to ‘make do’ with reduced rents or none whatsoever. It’s feared this sudden drop in yield could have pushed some landlords into arrears and may see the future landscape of the buy-to-let market alter substantially.

Beadle went onto say that: “a blanket extension is unacceptable, especially so close to the deadline.

The blanket ban was introduced by Housing Secretary, Robert Jenrick, last week.

The NRLA is calling for a comprehensive package of financial support to help landlords through the tenant eviction ban.
