With the recent news of Price Harry and his new wife Meghan wanting to step away from Royal duties and wanting to pay their own way; It asks the question of hoe much would it cost to rent a royal property?
Currently, royals that are performing duties are give residences for free. Others can live in properties across the UK but have to pay rent. One example of which is Princess Eugenie. She and her husband Jack Brooksbank reside at Ivy Cottage in Kensington.
According to The Times, rents are based on commercial rates however, these are adjusted given the type of security needed for each royal.
The property experts Purplebricks have estimated how much each royal would need to pay at each of the properties. Without further ado, let’s find out where would be most expensive to live.
Buckingham Palace – The Queen and Prince Phillip
When it comes to the largest palace that the UK has, it is difficult to put a price tag on a total rent for the palace. Buckingham Palace is not only home to the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh, it is also homes 775 spacious rooms. Within the number this makes up for 52 royal and guest bedrooms, 19 state rooms, 92 offices, 188 staff bedrooms and 78 bedrooms.
Considering this, Purplebricks have quoted that to rent an eight bedroom apartment at the palace, it would cost an eye watering 75k per month.
For those who can’t afford this (well, nearly all of us!), the palace is open to tours of property in Summer time.
Clarence House – Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles
A six minute walk down the road from Buckingham Palace sits Clarence House, home to the next in line to the throne, Prince Charles.
Him and his wife Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, live in the modest size house (well, modest to Buckingham Palace). It was the previous residence of the Queen Mother and before Charles moved into the property in 2002, he had the house refurbished.
To rent the whole house per month, Purplebricks it would be 100k a year. In a year, that could buy you around fourteen terraced houses in Burnley, Lancashire!
Kensington Palace – Prince William and Kate Middleton
Many royals in the past have lived at Kensington Palace, including Queen Victoria. However, at present, the palace is home to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and their three children. The palace is located in between the borough of Chelsea and Kensington.
The family live in a 20 room apartment named 1A. The flat, that used to be home to Prince Royal, boasts a nursery, staff quarters, five reception rooms and three main bedrooms.
To live in one of these flats, it would cost £30k a month.
Frogmore Cottage – Prince Harry and Meghan Markle
At present, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex reside in Frogmore Cottage, close to the house of Frogmore. In the news recently, they announced they were stepping down from senior duties and wanted to split there time between London and North America.

But, how much would rent cost per month? Well, it is estimated that it would be around £18k per month, making it the cheapest Royal property to reside in.

The Princess and her husband-to-be Edorado are thought to split their time between the palace and New York.
When in London, they reside at St James’s Palace, close to the Prince of Wales. According to Purplebricks, it would cost £20k per month to rent their apartment out.
